Before the world ever hears a note, reads a word, or witnesses a performance, Tauren Wells shares his artistry with his wife and children.
He doesn't write, sing, or perform in pursuit of success; it's much simpler and purer than that. The multi-GRAMMY® Award-nominated singer, songwriter, and pastor creates in order to draw his family closer to their collective faith, imparting lasting strength upon them. The same intent underscores his 2025 fourth full-length LP, his upcoming literary debut, and the Austin, TX house of worship he co-founded with his wife-Church of Whitestone.
"One of my favorite parts about making an album, writing a book, or creating anything is the moment I get to show my family what I'm doing," he affirms. "There's nothing like hearing them sing the songs. Who cares if it's a success? I have a memory ingrained in my head that I'll carry with me for the rest of my life. It brings so much beauty before there are ever results. One of the most invaluable things my wife and boys give me is perspective on what is important, what matters most, how fragile and fast life is, and how important our words are. It gives me a purpose to speak and write into."
This sense of purpose has driven Tauren since his debut as a solo artist in 2016.
Over the course of nearly a decade, he has quietly galvanized, energized, and inspired audiences worldwide. Among many accolades, he has impressively garnered 10 GRAMMY® Award nominations and eight GMA Dove Awards in addition to nods at the Billboard Music Awards, BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and more. Gathering over 1 billion worldwide streams and nearly half-a-billion views, he has notched seven #1 hits at radio and three consecutive Top 5 debuts on the Billboard Top Christian Albums Chart. His catalog has expanded with two RIAA platinum-certified singles-"Known" and "Hills and Valleys"-and two gold-certified singles, namely "God's Not Done With You" and "Famous For (I Believe)." Simultaneously, he has distinguished himself as the rare artist who can collaborate on a track with Academy® Award winner H.E.R. or arena-filling hard rock juggernaut Skillet and Davies. Beyond packing houses on headline tours, he notably joined Lionel Richie and Mariah Carey for a blockbuster run. Not to mention, he has delivered show stopping television performances on Good Morning America. Earning widespread acclaim from Billboard and more, Forbes hailed 2022's Joy In The Morning as "a musical amalgamation, successfully blending R&B, ballads and feel good pop vibes with an uplifting message."
In January 2024, Tauren and his family started a brand new church in Austin, Texas called Church of Whitestone, opening their doors for 4,000 people in their first weekend of services, marking the largest first day church launch in American history.
"For as long as I've been an artist, I've always been on staff at a church," he notes. "However, I've never written from the lens of being involved in a church and planted in the house of the Lord at this level. Those were big themes for me, and a lot of songs came from the birth of the church. On the last record, I felt like I got permission to bring my whole self into this. This body of work is a continuation. I'm not shying away from preaching the gospel and saying what I feel like God put in my heart. I'm opening up my heart, and it's connected to who I am."
For as much as he retained recognizable sonic signatures of vibrant pop, upbeat R&B, and confident hip-hop, he also leaned into worship music more than ever before. Akin to building the church brick-by-brick, music naturally materialized one session at a time. In tandem, Whitestone attracted an enthusiastic congregation, reminding Tauren of "the power of simplicity in worship."
That brings us to the first single "Making Room." Soft keys echo over a distant beat accented by delicately strummed guitar. His voice crescendos and swells into a hypnotic high register on the hook, "We're making room for a miracle from you, all we want is your presence, turn this room into heaven, we call your name."
"It was actually the first song from this batch," he recalls. "When we started the church, it was a major spiritual process and excavation into the heart. This song is about making room for God. You're making room for the changes he does in our lives and making room for miracles to take place. That's what led us into this place, so it just naturally felt like this should be what we put out into the world right now."
In between releasing more music, he penned his forthcoming book. He taps into the same energy.
"It's always been a dream of mine to write a book," he notes. "In Jesus's first sermon, he says, 'Blessed are the poor in spirit.' I found out that 'blessed' means happy and joyful. That made a bomb go off in my mind and heart. If the very first thing that Jesus ever wanted to tell people about was how to be happy, then how important must happiness be for the life and flourishing of people? That led me into the concept of 'Joy Bomb,' and how Jesus wired our souls to experience explosive joy in our everyday lives."
In the end, Tauren's spreading joy in his own way.
"When people hear this new music, I want them to walk away thinking about how amazing the church is," he says. "I just hope that we can re-engage with the wonder and beauty of community and faith. I'm still the same child of God, but with a sharpened focus on what He has called me to do in the world."
